2005 Movies

For the last two years (2003 and 2004, if you're keeping track), I've done a list at the end of the year of all the movies I've seen. I use this handy list, since I choose to define the task as "What movies from 2005 have I seen?" rather than "What movies did I see in 2005?" So this includes movies I saw in theaters and on television. It does not include any movies I may have seen early in the year that were actually released last year.

I've sorted them, roughly, in the order in which I enjoyed them. The movies at the top I quite liked; the movies at the bottom were either dull or an affront to my sensibilities. They are not listed in order of quality.

  1. Serenity
  2. King Kong
  3. The Aristocrats
  4. Rent
  5. Lipstick & Dynamite: The First Ladies of Wrestling
  6. The Producers
  7. Kung Fu Hustle
  8. Sin City
  9. Steamboy
  10. INSIDE Deep Throat
  11. Punk: Attitude
  12. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
  13. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  14. The Brothers Grimm
  15. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
  16. Batman Begins
  17. War of the Worlds
  18. Fantastic Four
  19. The Dukes of Hazzard
  20. Elektra
  21. Constantine
  22. The Exorcism of Emily Rose
  23. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
  24. White Noise
  25. Jiminy Glick in Lalawood

My first thought upon looking at this list of movies is that I certainly saw a lot of comic book and science fiction movies this year. More than usual, in fact. And many of them were not to my liking. I don't know if any of this year's movies really excited me the way, say, Pirates of the Caribbean or Shaun of the Dead did in previous years. I mean, I liked King Kong okay, but it's not like I'm telling everyone I know how great it was.

As a result, the top section of this list is fairly arbitrarily ordered. I liked everything from Steamboy up more than I liked the section below that, and Batman Begins through Dukes of Hazzard were the movies that I kind of disliked. The only reason Jiminy Glick in Lalawood is last because it barely even counts as a movie. I was more annoyed by the movies right above it.

I'm not sure where I should have put Rent. I find myself wanting to watch it again, which isn't really true of any of the other movies (I mean, I bought the Sin City DVD when it first came out, and I haven't watched it yet). On rewatching, I may decide I like it a lot, or I may conclude it's not for me. It's a mystery!

I saw 23 movies this year, which is more than 2004, but I think I may have seen the wrong ones. That always happens. I start out the year with grand plans to see more movies. "I'll watch a movie every week!" I declare and then January starts up and I'm out watching Elektra or Bloodrayne or something.

"I'll watch a movie every week!"

I did watch a movie every week this year (well, one to go) ... eventually, it felt a lot like work.

Finally. someone who didn't like Batman Begins. I didn't understand all the brouhaha about the film because it didn't entertain me at all. It was slow for the first hour, and even the ending couldn't redeem that fact.

I haven't seen Narnia yet, but now I'm worried. How come it's so far down on the list?

It's not that I didn't like Narnia; I was just really unexcited by it. It's a perfectly acceptable adaptation of the book, and I can understand the reason for the various changes, but it just didn't do anything for me. I think I just prefer it as a book, so I left the theater disappointed.
