July 26, 2005 Circus time! The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (the big circus, also called "The Greatest Show on Earth") is coming to town in a couple months. Meanwhile, Circus Chimera just took a tour through the area. Hence the project: The Great Circus Comparison! See, Circus Contraption is a local show that is, I think, sort of "edgy", and their last show before going to New York is this weekend. So Rhias and I are planning on doing some kind of Grand Circus Comparison. Well, to be fair, that's mostly my plan. Rhias is just "going to the circus". I'm the one with the charts and graphs. Not that I've decided what charts and graphs would be appropriate. Maybe I could rank the clowns on a Childlike Whimsy Scale. The higher the Whimsy, the more annoying the circus. We'll also compare the circuses to Teatro Zinzanni, which is a local Fancy Restaurant Plus Circus. Or something. I've read the description a couple of times, and all I can tell for sure is that they have red velvet ceiling. Now that's something you don't see every day! Well, I don't. Maybe you live in a turn-of-the-century Parisian whorehouse. I wouldn't know. If you do, though, I hope you're reclining on a fainting couch right now. Not because I'm going to say anything particularly shocking; I just think they look pretty stylish. So we've basically got three circuses to compare, which you might not think is enough to really develop a Unified Theory of Circuses. And you're probably right. But unfortunately, Cirque du Soleil isn't stopping by any time soon. I suppose I could try to find "Circus of the Stars" on the Internet, but I'm not all that optimistic about that. Let's face it, you take the circuses you're given. There are people who'd love to have three different circuses to choose from! I suppose some might say that I should just go to circuses and enjoy myself. Certainly, Rhias has made some comments to that effect. And there's something to that argument. But here's the thing: I already did that.. And it was fairly enjoyable, but I think it would be even more fun if I took it way too seriously. A lot of people underestimate how much fun can be had that way. I believe the Circus Contraption show we're going to is called the Grand American Traveling Dime Museum. Presumably, that will mean it'll have lots of mummies and fake Fiji mermaids and whatnot. I'm looking forward to that because I've been to the American Dime Museum in Washington DC. And I took pictures! I don't think the two Dime Museums are affiliated; it's just traditional for them to have absurdly inflated names. So, um, that's the plan. Circuses, circuses, circuses! And that spells fun! |
