Comic Con Loot

Okay, now to the most important part of Comic Con: the loot! I came back with lots of stuff, although not quite so much that I couldn't fit it all in my suitcase. I bought a few actual comic books, but what fun is that?

These are the buttons I got. There's one for the upcoming Buckaroo Banzai comic book, a Serenity, and three for the weird Dorothy of Oz comic book, which features a "modern horror" take on Oz, and the art is sort of photographic. And there's the pin that advertises the Lost DVD. I'm not sure where I picked that up. The purple thing is a small package of Stargate: Atlantis mints. I'm not sure the mints themselves are branded, but I assume that anything put in there becomes Stargate: Atlantis Whatever. And over to the right is a teeny Batman figure of some sort that was flung at us from a random booth.

At a lot of booths, I didn't have the money to buy everything I wanted or the time to properly browse, so I got lots of advertising dealies. Let's see . . . there's a few Palisades Toys things, a couple Mirrormasks (which I picked up at the CBLDF Mirrormask party that was being held at my hotel), something called Cannibal Corpse Riot, Luminous Film & Video Wurks, Cine-East, Moonstone comics, a place to get Santo movies in case I decide to get into them, Contoons.com, which is a webcomic I haven't even looked at but I honestly intend to, a thing for Lurker Films (the people behind the Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, I think), Justice League Unlimited (featuring a shot of the Legion of Doom headquarters in the upper left!), The Batman, and the Slave Labor Graphics Haunted Mansion thing. Whee! Now I just have to get around to going to all these websites.

In more traditional news, I got the exclusive Aqua Teen Hunger Force figures that have the Quad Laser. Jumping! Is useless!

I bought a number of dvds, several of them from places mentioned up there in the Advertising Dealies paragraph. Let's see . . . on the top, reading right to left, there's the Star Wars Holiday Special (watched it last night, and it was, in fact, terrible, although it was a really good transfer), Naked Weapon (I saw the trailer in a booth and it looked pretty good although I know nothing about it), Rough Magik (a Lovecraft movie I've heard is good), Emo Phillips Live at some college, and the Roger Corman Fantastic Four. On the bottom level, it's Edgeplay (a documentary about the Runaways), a collection of Heckle and Jeckle cartoons, the Laff-a-Lympics (Yay!), the Turkish Star Wars (really just a Turkish movie with some effects scenes from Star Wars), and Captain America. As you can see, many of these are very, very bad.

This time, I wanted to be one of those guys with a big sketchbook full of stuff done by all the artists. I always think it looks neat to have a book full of a lot of cool original art drawn just for you. Note the classy Dr. Cube sticker.

So the first sketch I got was at the Penny Arcade booth. The problem is, though, that as soon as I'm asked for what character I'd like, I lock up and say some tertiary character. This happy little fellow is named "Mr. Period", and he's appeared like twice. Ever. Plus, he's not the most complicated drawing ever. I'm not sure what I was thinking.

I stopped by the PVP booth to get a sketch from Scott Kurtz, but he was packing up at the time. I always feel like a jerk walking up and demanding that people do a sketch, you know? Especially from webcomic people, because they're frequently not even making money. By Saturday, I'd given up and left the sketchbook in my hotel room.

So when I got the Diesel Sweeties book, I was surprised when the artist offered to do a sketch. And the sketch is right on the book, which is cool. Plus, it's of Red Robot saying "Crush Monty!" That's neat!

Then, when I was taking a final pass through the dealer's room, I suddenly spotted a poster for Questionable Content. Score! And the artist was right there, and I was effusive enough in my praise that he offered to do a sketch for me. I didn't have my sketchbook (D'oh!), so he did it on a handy pad he had. And again, when I was asked what character I wanted, I choked and could only come up with a tertiary character: Pizza Girl. I think it's really cool that I have an original Pizza Girl, but it's still odd that I always come up with obscure backup characters.

And that's about it. We also made a Wahrenbrock's run (Wahrenbrock's is a great used book store in San Diego that I wrote about in my very first entry on this site!) and got some random books. Whee!

Comments

Nice haul of goodies there, Monty. I got the Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie a few years ago. The FX for it suck, but the story's not too bad. Is the little toy monkey from the Con too?

The monkey was actually sent to me by Strega (www.glumpish.com) and first made its appearance on my site in http://www.montykins.com/mkins/000335.html (where I took random pictures of stuff in my apartment).

I love the monkey!

Great loot! We went Sunday (aka the cheap day) and got nothing in particular to write home about. Oh well. Very cool stuff though.
