Resolution Time!

I don't have that many resolutions this time, but that just means that my failure will be less noticeable. I was going to spend this time reviewing last year's resolutions, but, um, I forgot to make any.

Okay, let's go.

  1. Eat Healthy, or at least Interestingly. I would have just said "cook more", but I appear to have used that in 2003. Basically, I'd like to cook a meal about once a week, because even if it's not really health food (and let's face it, it's going to be pan-seared ribeye steak a lot) it seems like it will be both healthier and cheaper than either eating out or eating a frozen microwave dinner. I think I'd also like to bring my lunch to work on occasion for the same reason. And also to justify the purchase of lunchboxes, which would clearly be unacceptably Hipster if I didn't use them to carry lunches in.

  2. Manage my Money Better. Now, see, this is a resolution where it makes sense to start right at the beginning of the year, don't you think? If I'm going to start having accurate financial records, it's convenient if they start at January 1, I would think. So Over the last couple days, I've been entering information into Quicken with the plan that I'll be able to see where my money goes. And then I'll probably be horrified by how much I waste on frivolities, and then it's a short hop to saving money. In theory.

  3. Keep Reading a Lot. This is the spot where most lists of resolutions say "read more," but honestly, I read about as much as it is physically possibly for me to do. There's a "Read 50 Books in a Year" meme out there, but I'm pretty sure I usually pass that mark some time in early March. I guess I want to read more new books, although blindly reading bestsellers can lead to The Da Vinci Code, and I'm sure no one wants that. I also think I'm going to try to keep track of which books I read, so at the end of the year, I can have one of those end-of-year recaps.

  4. Develop a Morning Routine. Shower, shave, eat breakfast, floss, brush, and get to work on time. How complicated can that be?

  5. See Movies. There are a bunch of movies that come out every year, you know. Why, practically every week, I have the option to see movies that people spent millions of dollars to make. If I'm going to live in a country that's so crazy for mindless entertainment, I'd be a fool not to take advantage of it.

  6. Travel. Oh, this is happening. For one thing, I am determined to go to the San Diego Comic Con this year, since it's been awhile since I've gone. Also, I'm hoping to go to New York in a couple months; ideally, I'll be able to see the finale of The Amazing Race at TARCon and also see a bunch of shows. On Broadway, I intend to see Wicked, Avenue Q, possibly Hairspray and (if everything works out perfectly) Monty Python's Spamalot. And of course there are other things to do in New York. And did I mention that my grand plan involves staying at the Algonquin? That's right: I'm making the pilgrimage. Heh.

  7. Improve Myself In a Matter To Be Determined Later. This will probably either take the form of improving my handwriting or brushing up on my Latin.

Number 5 is one of my resolutions, too - more specifically, to see 52 movies in theaters this year. I've made a list of about 30 planned releases for 2005 (and the end of 2004) so far, but I'm also hoping to see some older films as well.

Damn, knowing you're planning to go makes me think about attending TARCon again this year ...

I was thinking about TarCon this year, but then I found out it cost $50 - so, no. Anyhoo, I can't wait for you to arrive in this fair city - there'll be at least one other person in town who doesn't drink! Woohoo! Non-alcoholic drinks for everyone!

And, uh, Happy New Year!

I saw Spamalot in Chicago right before Christmas. It was awesome.

Greetings everyone!

I just recently stumbled upon the site...what a great source of information.

I have made a 2005 resolution to learn shorthand and need some help finding sources for learning Gregg Diamond Jubilee. I have found a few books, but am looking for online or distance education. Does anyone have any suggestions? I found a course at universalclass, but it's for the series 90 version of shorthand.

Please help...I searched alot today but can't seem to find much.

Thanks...Justin
