Snow Day

I should be at work. I just had a two-week Holiday Vacation, so there's no real reason I should be hiding at home in my pajamas and robe, and yet, here we are. And why? Because of the snow. Snow!

It's snowing hard enough that my work is shut down for the day. That's not that difficult; a couple of inches will be enough to do that, as long as it doesn't melt away instantly. And since it's been snowing since the middle of the night, there's enough terrifying white stuff to shut down some schools, which is all the excuse my workplace needs to follow suit.

Naturally, a breaking news story like this means that I can't sit here and watch The Price is Right in peace. I wouldn't normally want to watch The Price is Right at all, but I feel that there's certain procedures you're supposed to follow on a snow day. And for local news shows, those procedures involve breathlessly telling us about traffic accidents and the height of snowdrifts. Oh, and activating the Severe Weather Alert Center 3000. I don't know how long this coverage will go, but I'm hoping it's done in the next twenty minutes so I can watch Ellen.

Don't get me wrong, it's certainly snowing. It's not a blizzard or anything, but there's no denying that there's snow on the ground, and it looks different from normal. Hey, there's a news guy reporting Live From the Field about two hundred yards from my current location! In order to properly convey the message that we shouldn't travel anywhere, the news stations dispatch people all over the city to show us stalled traffic. Although in this case, he was showing us traffic moving along just fine. He promised us, though, that another four or five hours of uninterrupted snow would certainly produce delays.

Assuming the 24-Hour Emergency Snow Watch doesn't let up (meaning I can't watch Ellen), I may be forced to go outside. That's partly to make the treacherous one-block trek to the grocery store, and partly so that when I come back home I can say "It's not a fit night our for man nor beast." It's the little things.

Comments

Hee. We have snow down here in Portland and the local media is going nuts with it. It's rather amusing.
