October 22, 2001 I Am Filled With Hate and SalsaAs foretold by ancient prophecy, I am, once again, filled with hate. You might remember that first my car died. And then I was riding around on a bicycle, and then my car got fixed. But does the story end there? Well, as the hate that fills my body might tell you, the story has another chapter. Friday night, I was at work, and when I went out to get a snack, my car died. Again. In the same way that it died before, leading me to the sneaking suspicion that when I paid $400 to get it fixed, I didn't quite get full value for my money. So right now, I'm at home, but my car is out there. Unprotected on the nighttime streets. Lonely. Abandoned. And good riddance, too. Well, it's not really abandoned. This time, I recognized the symptoms of impending doom (the violins and children's chorus on the soundtrack was also a clue), so I was able to point the car in a useful direction. So although the car is technically parked "twenty feet from where it died," a more accurate description might be "right next to the towing company that's a block from my workplace". And I've already arranged for it to be towed to the people that failed to fix it the first time. So, naturally, I am filled with hate. I mean, wouldn't you be? And yet, it's not as frustrating as the last time this happened. Three weeks ago. Because at least this time, I have a plan. Having seen all this before, I know what to do. I still have my bicycle right by my front door, I still have a towing company's phone number on my cell-phone, and do on. It's a problem, and it's annoying, but I don't have the sense of helplessness I did before. Although my plan didn't work so great last time, so I don't know why I have confidence that it will work this time. So that's why I'm filled with hate. The other thing I'm filled with is salsa. See how I'm cleverly combining two irrelevant themes with this seamless transition? Yeah, so anyway, I made homemade salsa last week. It took a really long time, and it wasn't very good. I think part of the problem is that I got bored, so I wasn't chopping the tomatoes and onion and garlic into very small pieces. Also, I'm not at all sure I put in anywhere near the right amount of chili powder. On the other hand, the jalapenos came out very nice. The salsa as a whole, however, did nothing but make my apartment smell like garlic, onion, and cilantro. Then, after I spent all that time (two or three hours, because I haven't chopped up food in quite some time. So long, in fact, that I forgot all about the importance, when chopping onions, of having your eyes surgically removed), I really wanted to eat chips and salsa. But since my homemade salsa was insufficiently tasty, what was I to do? Clearly, the correct answer was to eat the store-bought salsa that I picked up at the same time as the ingredients. It may not have much snob appeal, but Pace makes a perfectly acceptable salsa. Hot, too. Mmm. |
